Job Summary

K-CET will maintain a list of up to ten fill-in instructors per program year. Candidates will be interviewed and must pass a KCC background check. Candidates may indicate a class preference (GED in English, GED in Spanish, ESL, Citizenship Preparation). Work is occasional and hours are not guaranteed.

The fill-in instructor is responsible for following instructions left by the K-CET Instructor, facilitating a multi-level classroom of adult learners, tracking attendance, and communicating with K-CET administration.

The K-CET Instructor contributes to the success of the Klamath Community College’s Adult Basic Education Program by providing quality instruction to improve basic skills and/or prepare for a GED® credential in English or Spanish and/or English proficiency as measured by CASAS gains, and/or Citizenship Preparation classes. The instructor is responsible for aligning curriculum and instructional strategies with program and state metrics, including the Oregon Adult College and Career Readiness Standards (OACCRS), English Language Proficiency (ELP) standards for Adult Basic Education and CASAS gains. The instructor is responsible for a multi-level class of adult learners and is responsible for instructing adult learners in reading, writing, social studies, science, and mathematical content knowledge. The instructor will support student retention and tracking efforts for student success and program success. The instructor will support students in transitioning to higher education or entering the workforce.

Contributes to the success of the K-CET program by providing quality instruction and support activities. Instruction 

  • The fill-in instructor must be able to follow instructions left by the classroom instructor and be comfortable working with a diverse group of multi-level adult learners.  
  • The fill-in instructor must be able to implement instructional activities for a cohort of adult learners preparing for a GED® certificate in English or Spanish, ESL proficiency, or Citizenship Preparation. 
  • The fill-in instructor for GED must have the ability to teach GED® subjects in English and/or Spanish. 
  • The fill-in instructor must be able to teach course information to students using instructional methodology appropriate to the audience and the subject, e.g., group discussion, online, technology-enhanced delivery, computers at various times. 
  • The fill-in instructor must be able to deliver supplemental teaching materials in various ways to meet the needs of a broad range of learning abilities, utilizing a variety of teaching styles to provide quality learning experiences to a diverse student population. 
  • The fill-in instructor must be able to evaluate and assess student academic achievement and demonstrate modification of teaching techniques in accordance with assessment feedback. 

         Support Activities

  • Works effectively using English written and oral communication skills, organizational skills, and interpersonal skills to meet all department requirements. 
  • Track student attendance with a focus on student retention and persistence. 
  • Performs related work as assigned. 
  • Work hours are mornings and/or evenings.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Needed to Perform This Role 

  • Experience teaching adult students is preferred. 
  • Strong Math, English, Social Studies, and Science background preferred, or language skills and experience.
  • Individuals, preferably, should possess knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment appropriate for instructing adult learners to obtain a GED® or improve English skills. 
  • Must demonstrate a commitment and ability to serve a diverse community, including low-income families and English language learners. 
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently. 
  • Ability to manage and maintain a professional classroom; ability to provide instruction to adult participants whose basic skills are below the twelfth-grade level or to adult participants seeking to increase English skills; ability to provide instruction to students who range from low literacy levels to those with degrees from countries outside the United States. 
  • Possess working skills in using technology to deliver instruction, communicate via e-mail, and teach basic computer skills to the adult learner. 
  • Ability to implement and maintain office organization, recordkeeping, and files. 
  • Ability to work with others in a group or team and remain flexible despite interruptions and changes to priorities and job duties. 
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, including the ability to maintain composure under pressure. 
  • Ability to interact effectively with others face-to-face, by telephone, and through other communication modalities using active listening skills and excellent teamwork. 
  • Ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and professionally through verbal and written formats.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information. 
  • Proficient in technology needed to support program goals, including proficiency in typing with accuracy; working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint); and Zoom. 
  • Skills and value for a team approach in solving problems. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to respectfully work with students, staff, and faculty of diverse backgrounds. 
  • Reliable in meeting exacting or highly accurate work results, strict deadlines, and prompt and friendly service delivery. 

 

Required Education & Experience

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in education or a related field. 
  • Bilingual in Spanish is required to fill-in for GED in Spanish. 
  • Demonstrated sensitivity and experience working with individuals from diverse social, economic, ethnic, academic, disability, and cultural backgrounds. 

    Preferred

  • TESOL certification preferred.
     

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS 

  • May occasionally lift, carry, stoop, and bend (up to 20 lbs.). 
  • Frequently moving from stationary sitting positions to standing and walking.
