Job Summary

The Admissions Clerk is responsible for performing reception, registration, and clerical duties associated with patient admissions for inpatient, outpatient, and emergency department services. This role obtains accurate demographic, billing, and clinical information, ensures appropriate documentation, and maintains communication with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate an efficient admissions process.

Essential Functions

  • Performs patient registration for scheduled and unscheduled admissions, outpatient procedures, and emergency department services.

  • Obtains and verifies patient demographic, billing, and insurance information, ensuring accuracy and completeness.

  • Distributes and explains forms, documents, and educational materials to patients or their caregivers.

  • Coordinates with physician offices, nursing units, and other departments to facilitate the admissions process.

  • Verifies insurance benefits and obtains pre-certifications and authorizations as required.

  • Collects co-pays, deductibles, and other payments; provides referrals for financial counseling as needed.

  • Maintains accurate records of patient interactions and documents actions taken to resolve inquiries.

  • Participates in call rotations as scheduled to support admissions desk coverage.

  • Ensures compliance with organizational policies regarding patient confidentiality and HIPAA regulations.

  • Maintains a clean and organized workspace, including sanitizing equipment and workstations.

  • Assists with additional administrative duties as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data entry.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).

  • Basic knowledge of insurance verification and billing processes.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

Qualifications

Education:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent including education equivalent to completion of secondary school or demonstrated ability to perform the essential functions of the role (required)

Experience:

  • Prior experience in a hospital or medical office setting (preferred) And

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment (required)
