The Hennepin County Medical Examiners Office is seeking a Business Office Supervisor to lead and support the daily administrative and operational functions of the Business Office. This position oversees frontline business operations, supports department leadership, ensures compliance with legal and data practices requirements, and helps drive a high-functioning administrative environment that serves Hennepin, Dakota, and Scott counties. In addition, the Business Office Supervisor assists with key finance functions, including budgeting, administrative project work, and financial operations support, and contributes to workforce administration.

Location and hours:
This position is hybrid and will be performed primarily on-site at the Hennepin County Medical Examiners Office, 14250 Highway 62, Minnetonka, MN 55345, with limited remote work as job duties require. There is no public transportation to this facility. Work hours will be Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. 4:30 p.m . While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin. New Employee Orientation (NEO) for all new benefit-earning employees is in-person in downtown Minneapolis. Details about NEO will be provided upon hire.

In this position, you will:
- Supervise, schedule, and assign work to the Business Office team and evaluate performance of business office staff and operations based on stated goals and objectives, including enforcing personnel rules and labor contracts.
- Assist with department budget, annual statistic preparation, workforce administration, and the review and development of policies and procedures, including implementation.
- Investigate and recommend action regarding complaints about services, operations, policies, or procedures with the business office and operational issues.
- Interpret current and proposed data-practice laws and regulations and oversee the release of medical examiner data in collaboration with the Responsible Authority for high risk and high-profile requests.
- Assist with confidential programs like Safe at Home and OSHA.
- Support educational programs, including those involving medical students, fellows, interns, and other learners.
- Perform administrative project work to support departmental business operations, including finance, IT, grant management, budgeting, tracking of capital assets, and other daily functions.
- Participate in department supervisor, operations, and facility meetings and represent the department on select committees (internal and external), with limited authority to act on department's behalf.
- Provide leadership to further department-based strategies that align with county goals, mission and core values.
- One of the following:
- Bachelor's degree or higher in business administration, public administration, or another field appropriate to the position and two years or more of administrative experience.
- Six years or more of administrative experience.
- Experience:
- Supervising and developing direct reports, including performance management.
- Scheduling work assignments, training and evaluating the performance of staff, and enforcing best practices, policies, and procedures.
- Working with departmental and organizational finance and budgeting .
- Reviewing, evaluating, proposing, and implementing policies and procedures.
- With workforce administration.
- Working with labor unions, labor contracts, and personnel rules.
- Working with private, confidential, and public data including data compliance and analysis.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (PivotTables, formulas) and the broader Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Teams) for building reports.
- Familiarity with general finance and related systems where applicable.
- Ability to:
- Analyze business workflow and implement changes.
- Build and nurture collaborative relationships with diverse staff and customers, both internal and external.
- Be flexible and comfortable with change, complexity, and ambiguity.
- Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Manage conflict and foster a teamwork environment.
- Lead, develop, and manage direct reports to ensure engagement and continuous improvement.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office under the leadership of Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Andrew M. Baker, provides death investigative services and forensic autopsy services for deaths that occur in Hennepin County, Dakota County, Scott County, and other counties across the Midwest.
