Position Summary
The IT Infrastructure Database Administrator is responsible for the administration, support, monitoring, maintenance, security, and remediation of enterprise database platforms across corporate, on-premises, cloud, and NERC CIP-regulated environments. This role supports SQL Server, Oracle, and related database technologies used by various applications across the enterprise.
The IT Infrastructure Database Administrator partners with Infrastructure, Cybersecurity, Application Support, Compliance, vendors, and business stakeholders to ensure database systems are reliable, secure, recoverable, and compliant with organizational standards and applicable regulatory requirements.
This role is responsible for day-to-day database operations, including performance monitoring, backup and recovery, patching, upgrades, access control, troubleshooting, capacity planning, documentation, and support of critical business and operational systems.
This role is based at Deriva Energy Headquarters, located in Charlotte, NC.
Key Responsibilities
Solution Definition and Review
Collaborate with application, infrastructure, and development teams to design, review, and support database solutions
Ensure database solutions meet business requirements, operational standards, security requirements, and industry best practices
Review database architecture, configuration, performance, availability, and supportability for new and existing applications
Provide technical input for database-related projects, upgrades, migrations, and application changes
Database Support and Maintenance
Administer and support enterprise SQL Server, Oracle, and related database platforms across on-premises, cloud, and hybrid environments
Provide operational support for databases supporting various corporate, infrastructure, business, and NERC CIP-related applications
Provide after- hours or 24/7 support for critical database systems as required
Troubleshoot and resolve database-related incidents, failed jobs, connectivity issues, storage issues, performance degradation, and application-impacting problems
Perform routine database maintenance, including index maintenance, statistics updates, database cleanup, health checks, and job monitoring
Support database lifecycle activities, including provisioning, configuration, upgrades, decommissioning, and migrations
Monitoring, Remediation, and Performance Tuning
Monitor database availability, performance, storage, capacity, backup status, scheduled jobs, replication, and overall system health
Respond to database alerts and perform timely remediation to reduce business impact
Perform root-cause analysis for recurring issues and recommend long-term corrective actions
Implement and maintain database monitoring, reporting, and alerting standards
Conduct performance tuning and optimization for queries, indexes, database configuration, and server resource usage
Generate reports on database performance, usage, availability, capacity, and operational metrics as required
Patching, Upgrades, and Change Management
Plan, test, and apply database patches, updates, and version upgrades in accordance with organizational policies
Validate patches and upgrades in non-production environments before production deployment where applicable
Coordinate database maintenance windows with application owners, Infrastructure, Cybersecurity, vendors, and business stakeholders
Follow established change management processes, including documentation, approvals, implementation plans, validation steps, and backout plans
Support vulnerability remediation efforts related to database platforms and supporting infrastructure
On-Premises and Cloud Database Management
Manage database systems hosted on-premises , in cloud environments, and across hybrid platforms
Support cloud-based database services, including monitoring, performance, backup, recovery, access control, and cost awareness
Work with Infrastructure teams to support database dependencies, including servers, storage, networking, identity, backups, and disaster recovery platforms
Assist with database migrations between on-premises and cloud environments
Backup, Recovery, High Availability, and Disaster Recovery
Implement, monitor , and maintain database backup and recovery strategies
Ensure database backups are successful, properly retained , and regularly tested
Perform database restores and recovery activities as needed
Support high availability and disaster recovery solutions for critical database systems
Participate in disaster recovery planning, testing, documentation, and remediation of identified gaps
Security, Compliance, and NERC CIP Support
Ensure database platforms are secured in accordance with company policies, cybersecurity standards, and applicable regulatory requirements
Support database administration activities within NERC CIP-regulated environments, including access control, change control, audit evidence, and secure configuration
Implement and maintain database security controls, including user access, roles, permissions, privileged access, authentication, encryption, and logging where applicable
Support access reviews, compliance requests, audit evidence collection, and remediation of findings
Partner with Cybersecurity and Compliance teams to address database vulnerabilities, control gaps, and regulatory requirements
Follow approved procedures for database changes, access modifications, patching, and administrative activity in regulated environments
Capacity Planning and Resource Management
Conduct capacity planning to ensure databases can support current and future business needs
Monitor and manage database storage, compute resources, memory utilization , and growth trends
Recommend improvements to database sizing, storage allocation, retention, archiving, and resource optimization
Identify risks related to database capacity, performance, availability, or lifecycle status
Documentation and Process Improvement
Maintain accurate documentation of database configurations, standards, procedures, maintenance activities, changes, backup schedules, and recovery steps
Create and maintain operational runbooks for common database support, monitoring, remediation, and recovery tasks
Document database inventory, application ownership, criticality, dependencies, and support requirements
Recommend improvements to database standards, automation, monitoring, reporting, and operational efficiency
Support knowledge transfer and cross-training within Infrastructure and Application Support teams
Basic Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Computer Science , Information Technology, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent work experience
Three (3) years or more of related experience in addition to bachelors degree
In lieu of a bachelors degree in a related field, an associates degree in data science, computer science, engineering, statistics, or a related field AND six (6) years of relevant work experience
In lieu of an associates degree in a related field, HS Diploma/GED AND eight (8) years of relevant work experience
Desired Qualifications
Proven experience as a SQL Server, Oracle, or Enterprise Database Administrator
Strong knowledge of SQL Server and/or Oracle database administration
Experience supporting databases in both on-premises and cloud environments
Experience with database monitoring, troubleshooting, performance tuning, and optimization
Experience implementing and supporting database backup, restore, and recovery procedures
Strong understanding of database security principles, access controls, privileged access management, and secure configuration practices
Experience supporting production systems, critical applications, and enterprise business environments
Experience working within incident, request, change, and problem management processes
Strong analytical, troubleshooting, documentation, and problem-solving skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively across technical and business teams
Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts and issues to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Experience supporting databases in regulated environments such as NERC CIP, SOX, energy, utilities, financial services, or other critical infrastructure sectors
Experience with cloud database platforms, including Azure SQL, Azure SQL Managed Instance, AWS RDS, Oracle Cloud, or similar services
Experience with high-availability and disaster recovery technologies, including clustering, replication, log shipping, Always On Availability Groups, Data Guard, or comparable solutions
Experience with database patching, vulnerability remediation, audit support, and compliance evidence collection
Proficiency with PowerShell, SQL scripting, automation, reporting, and infrastructure monitoring tools
Familiarity with Windows Server, Linux, Active Directory, identity and access management, networking, storage, and backup technologies
Experience supporting vendor-hosted or third-party enterprise applications with database dependencie

This role is intended to be located at the Deriva Energy Headquarters office in Charlotte, NC. or another strategic Deriva Energy location.
This is an in-person position with flexibility to work remotely once per week
