As a Unit Clerk in 7-Med/Surg Department at UAB Medical West, you will provide administrative and clerical support to nursing staff, physicians, patients, and visitors within a hospital unit. Under the supervision of the RN or LPN, the Unit Clerk ensures efficient communication, accurate documentation, and coordination of unit activities to support quality patient care. The Unit Clerk will monitor front desk, answer phones, help maintain a clean environment. Stock supplies and provide wonderful customer service.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school graduate or equivalent required.
- Minimum of one (1) year of clerical, administrative, customer service, or healthcare support experience preferred.
- Experience with Electronic Health Record required.
- A minimum of BLS is required. BLS must be obtained within 30 days of hire. BLS must be renewed per BLS guidelines and up to date. The employee has 30 days from expiration to renew
- Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office applications and data entry.
- Ability to accurately type and maintain records.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize duties in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience as a Unit Secretary, Ward Clerk, Medical Secretary, or similar healthcare support role.
- Experience with electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
- Medical terminology coursework or certification.
- Knowledge of hospital operations and patient flow processes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Answer and direct telephone calls and unit communications.
- Maintain and update patient records and medical charts.
- Enter physician orders and patient information into electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
- Coordinate patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.
- Schedule diagnostic tests, procedures, and consultations.
- Monitor unit supplies and initiate replenishment requests.
- Greet and assist patients, families, and visitors.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
- Collaborate effectively with nursing staff, physicians, and ancillary departments.
- Perform other clerical and administrative duties as assigned.
