SummaryPosition Summary
The Law Clerk/Legal Intern provides legal, regulatory, and compliance support to the Legal Department in furtherance of organizational risk management, regulatory compliance, and operational objectives across affiliated facilities. Working under the direction of Lead Counsel and in collaboration with operational and corporate leadership, this position assists with regulatory research and analysis, policy development, investigations, litigation support, contract administration, and compliance initiatives. The role supports adherence to applicable federal and state healthcare regulations, workforce standards, and organizational policies.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Regulatory Compliance and Legal Research
Monitor and track federal and state regulatory developments affecting long-term care and senior living operations.
Research and analyze regulations issued by agencies including the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Minnesota Department of Health, and Minnesota Nursing Home Workforce Standards Board.
Maintain regulatory compliance trackers, legal resources, and policy matrices.
Support regulatory surveys, audits, investigations, and compliance reviews.
Prepare regulatory summaries, legal memoranda, and briefing materials for leadership.
Policy and Procedure Administration
Draft, review, and revise organizational policies and procedures.
Evaluate policies for consistency with applicable laws, regulations, and industry best practices.
Assist with implementation of regulatory and policy changes across affiliated facilities.
Investigations and Risk Management
Assist with internal investigations, including document collection, review, and analysis.
Prepare investigation summaries and maintain related documentation.
Monitor corrective action plans and follow-up activities to support risk mitigation efforts.
Contract and Operational Support
Review, organize, and maintain vendor agreements, service contracts, and related documentation.
Maintain contract databases, tracking systems, and renewal schedules.
Assist with amendments, renewals, and terminations of provider agreements as directed.
Litigation and Administrative Proceedings Support
Coordinate document collection, organization, and production for litigation and administrative matters.
Assist in preparing materials and evidentiary submissions for administrative hearings, Independent Dispute Resolution (IDR), Informal Independent Dispute Resolution (IIDR), and resident discharge appeals.
Coordinate responses to subpoenas, regulatory inquiries, and records requests.
Maintain litigation hold documentation and related records.
Department Administration and Training Support
Maintain legal department files, records, and regulatory databases.
Develop and update compliance-related training materials and educational resources.
Conduct legal and regulatory research related to healthcare, employment, and operational matters.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
Required
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
Demonstrated ability to conduct research, analyze information, and prepare written summaries and reports.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain confidentiality.
Must qualify for employment, after criminal background study, per guidelines of the Minnesota Department of Human Services.
Preferred
Current enrollment in an accredited law school (1L, 2L, or 3L) or recent completion of a Juris Doctor (J.D.) program.
One (1) to three (3) years of experience in healthcare, regulatory compliance, legal support, or a related field.
Experience in long-term care, senior living, or healthcare operations.
Experience conducting legal, regulatory, or compliance-related research and analysis.
Required Skills and Abilities
