Under general supervision, provides administrative support as directed.

This position provides support to the Veterans Service Officer and assumes complete responsibility for the Veterans Service Office in the absence of the Veterans Service Officer(s). Duties for this position include but are not limited to answering, screening and transferring telephone calls; scheduling and coordinating meetings and appointments; preparing agendas and schedules for meetings and distributing meeting minutes; providing project support; making copies; retrieving documents; processing mailings; maintaining electronic and hard copy filing system; and other duties as assigned.

This position maintains all records for the Hamilton County Veteran's Services Office. Greets and welcomes guests/clients into the office and helps assess their needs and resolve concerns.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of standard and community office practices, principles, and methods.

Knowledge of operation and maintenance of standard office equipment.

Knowledge of clerical and administrative procedures and systems such as filing and record keeping.

Knowledge of principles and practices of basic office management.

Skill in detail orientation and comfortable working in a fast-paced office environment.

Skill in organizational procedures and dedicated to completing projects in a timely manner.

Skill in exercising discretion and independent judgment to respond to requests in a tactful, courteous, and prompt manner.

Skill in the use of a personal computer and related software.

Skill in English composition, grammar, spelling and punctuation.

Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

Skill in verbal and written communication.

Skill in maintaining proper filing procedures.

Skill in interpersonal relations with diverse populations.

Skill and experience in assisting with neighborhood organizing and planning.

Skill in recruitment and mobilizing volunteers.

Skill in problem solving.

Skill in customer service.

Skill in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically in Excel, Outlook, and Word.

An Associates Degree in Business Administration or a related field and five (5) years secretarial/administrative assistant/customer service experience. Must be able to type 35 words per minute. A typing test may be required. A valid drivers license is also required.

OR

The equivalent of a high school diploma and two (2) years of direct work experience in business administration or a related field and five (5) years secretarial/administrative assistant/customer service experience. Must be able to type 35 words per minute. A typing test may be required. A valid drivers license is also required.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Prior to operating a County-owned vehicle, all employees are required to complete the HC Defensive Driving course and/or an Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) provided at the department level.

Applicants must possess a current Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card issued by the Dept. of Veterans Affairs at the time of hire or be able to obtain a PIV card within six (6) months of date of hire.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Volunteer work with a veterans organization or service in The United States Armed Forces is preferred for this position.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work requires a minimum of physical effort with intermittent sitting, standing and movement. Excessive keyboarding may be required. Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds on an occasional basis.
