Description of Work

Salary Range: $43,614.00 - $64,851.00

The North Carolina Administrative Office of the Courts seeks a qualified Appellate Transcriptionist to accurately transcribe and punctuate the spoken word to create a verbatim record for court proceedings, hearings, and depositions for the appeals process. This position requires an understanding of the Court's legal system including relevant ethics, professional standards and procedures. The role is critical for ensuring a precise record is available for appellate courts.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Produce an accurate legal transcript from an audio recording device according to specific court requirements.
  • Transcribe, format, proof and certify official transcripts according to specific court requirements ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Masters transcript formatting.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Provide support to the court reporting manager by assisting in assignment and/or reassignment of transcripts to employees.
  • Provide administrative support as assigned by court reporting manager.
  • Follow proper courtroom confidentiality and etiquette, including impartiality to parties, exhibiting professional demeanor and appearance, and comply with policies related to court interactions or proceedings.

The Appellate Transcription position reports directly to the Court Reporting Manager.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of: fundamentals of court proceedings, documents and rules related to capturing a verbatim court record; transcript production; English, grammar, punctuation, and spelling; court rules, regulations, procedures, and operations; legal and various specialized terminology; and transcript formatting and style.

Skills in: transcribing notes rapidly and accurately; typing speed and accuracy listening from audio recordings.

Ability to: type a volume of material over a sustained period within deadlines; maintain confidentiality; and represent the court in a manner consistent with its decorum.

High school diploma plus three years of professional transcription experience or an associate's degree plus one year of transcription experience or American Association of Electronic Reporters and Transcribers (AAERT) Certification plus one year of professional transcription experience.
