Oncology Data Specialist - Cancer Coordination

Requirements:
1. Job responsibilities include those listed in competency document.
2. Maintains a professional image and exhibits excellent customer relations to patients, visitors, physicians, and co-workers in accordance with our Service Excellence Standards and Core Values.
3. Plans and organizes activities of Cancer Registry to meet the standards of the Medical Staff and American College of Surgeons.
4. Abstracts and analyzes clinical data of cancer patients.
a. Completes previous years analytical abstraction within 6 months of end of year
b. Reviews path reports regularly to determine abstracting needs.
c. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of coding cancer sites as specified by national guidelines.
d. Protects the confidentiality of patient information.
e. Identifies reportable cases through patient index, pathology reports and radiation oncology patients.
5. Maintains long term follow-up data on all cancer patients by contacting hospitals, physicians or patients.
a. Conducts follow-up interviews by phone and/or mail follow-up letters per accreditation standards in order to maintain compliance to standards.
6. Assist with coordination of and participation in cancer committee meetings and cancer conferences.
7. Communicates changes to staging and data entry guidelines to departmental director.
8. Performs quality checks by reviewing abstracts with a physician advisor or by re-abstracting charts.
9. Participates in special studies as requested by ACOS.
10. Serves as a liaison to and produces reports for administration, medical staff, other hospital departments, SC State Registry, National Cancer Data Base, and other related outside agencies from statistics.
a. Responds to all requests for report within 72 hours.
b. Prepares reports that are clear, concise and accurate.
c. Maintains reports and files in well-organized system.
11. As required, creates and uploads reports to the state and national cancer database
12. Serves as a member of the Cancer Committee.
13. Provides guidance for novice oncology data specialists.
14. Work may be completed remotely.
Licenses/Certifications/Registrations/Education:
- Minimum of a High School Diploma/GED from an accredited school
- Successful completion of college level curriculum in Medical Records, Nursing or other allied health field or credential or licensed status in appropriate allied health field.
- Certified as Oncology Data Specialist per NCRA requirements or must attain certification within 2 yrs. of hire (test dates contingent upon dates offered.)
