JOB DESCRIPTION - School Receptionist
Nature of Work Employees in this classification
Assist the school office operations in a variety of ways depending upon the size of the school and age of the students. The primary activities associated with the job include general office management duties, responsibility for answering incoming calls, receiving students, teachers, parents, and visitors as they enter the office, and attending to their needs in a friendly and professional manner. Performance is reviewed through observation of the level of service to clientele, staff, and the public and the efficiency of office operations.
Illustrative Examples of Work
-Answer incoming calls, takes messages, provides assistance and information or refers to the appropriate party for resolution.
-Radio administration, teachers, and staff when necessary.
-Greets parents, students, visitors, and vendors as they enter the main office.
-Makes copies of documents, fliers, informational materiels, etc. as required.
-Receives incoming mail, opens, sorts, and distributes to faculty and staff.
-Attends to the needs of students who become ill during the school day to insure proper care.
-Types routine correspondence, prepares lists, assists in file maintenance, and performs other general office duties as required.
-Maintains logs of medicines received from parents and students and administers medicine to students as prescribed.
-Assists faculty and support staff with special events and activities.
-Performs basic first aide procedure on students who become ill or injured during the school day.
-Relays messages to students and runs errands in the school to contact staff or assist in school activities.
-Perform related duties as required. Necessary Requirements of Work Graduation from an accredited high school or a GED, experience working with the public and in an office environment, strong interpersonal and organizational skill or any equivalent combination of education and experience to provide the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:
-Knowledge of the Jefferson County public school policies and procedures pertaining to student attendance and absence from school.
- Knowledge of contemporary office equipment including multi-line telephones, copiers, FAX machines, public address systems, and computers.
-Knowledge of conventional office management procedures and practice including file maintenance, basic budgetary practices, and information management.
-Ability to respond quickly and effectively to different job demands and pressures.
-Ability to interact in a professional and tactful manner with students, parents, staff, and the public in person and on the telephone.
-Ability to empathize with students who become sick or injured during the school day and administer basic first aide and/or medication if necessary.
-Ability to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job. -Skill in the operation of contemporary office equipment. Able to lift 25 pounds.
