Job Summary:
The receptionist sets the tone for the patients experience in the Center, as he / she is the patients first impression of the organization. The receptionist performs clerical and administrative duties.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Greet patients and their family members / significant others upon arrival to the Center.
  • Make copies of the patients insurance card(s) and their drivers license.
  • Verify patients demographic information, address, phone number, date of birth, and insurance.
  • Apply patient identification arm band, as well as an allergy arm band if necessary.
  • Prepare for the next days appointments by putting together all necessary paperwork for each patient.
  • Confirm upcoming appointments by calling patients; give necessary information and directions if needed.
  • Verify insurance coverage when instructed.
  • Assist with scheduling or rescheduling patients appointments as needed.
  • Protect the patients privacy at all times.
  • Monitor patients/family members/visitors in the waiting room at all times; notify the Administrator or Nurse Manager of any problems/issues/emergencies.
  • May transport patients to the preop / changing area if necessary.
  • Maintain a friendly, positive and caring attitude with all patients, physicians, and staff.
  • Take an active role on committees within the organization.
  • Identify actual and potential risks to patients and others and take action to minimize or eliminate risk and maximize safety in the facility.
  • Communicate with other health care team members to ensure continuity of care.
  • Cooperate willingly and communicate effectively utilizing proper channels with team members.
  • Acts as a runner between the various areas within the center.
  • Assist with the ordering of office supplies as needed.

Qualifications

Required Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology is preferred.
  • Two (2) years related experience and/or training in a healthcare environment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and have an ability to work compatibly with all physicians and staff. Possess strong organizational skills and a clear understanding of the importance of efficiency and cost effectiveness in an outpatient surgery center.
  • The receptionist must have the knowledge and skills to perform the essential job duties

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Working Conditions:
General working conditions include working inside in an office or clinical setting with comfortable temperatures year-round. There may occasionally be exposure to blood and body fluids, and policies are in place for Universal Precautions identifying risks and appropriate barrier protection.

Physical Requirements:
Physical requirements include the ability to sit for up to eight (8) hours per day, bend, stoop, twist. Visual acuity to allow for extended time viewing computer screen. Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds and carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
